The good news is, we’ve got your back. As professional movers in Ontario, we’ve helped hundreds of people move into their new homes. We’ve put together a list of our top tips to help you get organized, so you can keep your stress levels in check and actually enjoy the big day.

1. Pack your boxes strategically

Having all of your items packed in sturdy, sealed boxes is Moving 101. But if you want to go beyond the basics and have the most efficient, hassle-free move possible, you need a packing strategy.

Think about what you’ll need to use right away, as soon as the very first night in your new home. Things like pillows, bed sheets, basic cutlery and dishes, and toiletries (and don’t forget your pet’s needs, too!). Pack those items together in clearly marked boxes, so they’re easy to find when you arrive in your new home. Because there’s nothing worse after a long day of moving than searching through dozens of boxes to find your toothbrush or a towel. Once you’re settled in, you can move on to unpacking the less urgent boxes at your own pace.

2. Label everything

Which brings us to our next point: label everything. Unpacking is just as big a job as packing, so make it easy on yourself by labeling all of your moving boxes in detail.

It’s usually not enough to just mark the boxes with “kitchen” or “bedroom” or “bathroom.” Once you’re in a new place, your brain has enough to do without trying to remember which of the ten kitchen boxes has the forks and knives. So be specific about the contents of each box. For example, “kitchen cutlery + mugs” or “bedroom pillows + blankets.”

3. Make safety your #1 priority

If it isn’t well managed, a house in transition can be an accident waiting to happen. And the last thing you want on your moving day is any trips, falls, or other injuries. So set yourself up for a successful — and safe — move by removing any potential hazards before you get started and keep your eyes peeled for anything that poses a danger.

Here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Keep all hallways and doorways clear of any objects.
  • Roll up carpets and keep them out of the way until they’re ready to be moved.
  • Make sure any snow or ice is cleared away from the exterior of your home.
  • Don’t overpack your boxes (aim for no more than 50 pounds of stuff per box).
  • Arrange for your pets to be safely out of the way during the move.

4. Hire professional movers

Most people find the stress of handling a move all on their own to be overwhelming. Getting help from professional movers can make the day much easier.

Especially for your first move, you’ll want experts on hand who can help with everything, from safely transporting your 300-pound piano to making sure your mirrors and glassware arrive intact. But be sure to do your homework and hire a reputable moving agency who will do the job right and for a fair price.
